File types
Settings ▸ Advanced ▸ File Types lists every format Solidly opens, with a switch per format:
.gltf .glb .fbx .obj .stl .ply .usd .usda .usdc .usdz
Turning a switch on makes Solidly the default application for that file type, so double-clicking a file of that type in the Finder opens it in Solidly. Turning it off restores the application that handled it before.
Each switch shows a progress indicator while macOS applies the change, since the change goes through Launch Services rather than being written directly. If a change cannot be applied, the pane reports the reason under the list.
A format whose type macOS does not recognize on this Mac is shown as Unavailable.
File types and Quick Look are separate
Two different questions are being answered by two different settings:
- File Types decides which application opens a file when you double-click it.
- Quick Look decides which extension draws the preview when you press Space.
Setting one does not set the other. A file can preview with Solidly and open in another application, or the reverse. See Quick Look.
Opening a file without changing the default
The Finder's Open With menu opens a single file in Solidly without changing anything. Dragging a file onto the Solidly window, or onto its Dock icon, does the same.
From a shell, the solidly command opens a file in the application in the same way; see The solidly command.
